NOBODY 2
Nobody 2
Directed by Timo Tjahjanto
Hutch is back, baby! Wait...what does that mean lol. The first NOBODY came out 4 years ago, or 2021 for those of us that have completely memory-holed the pandemi years. I saw it once upon release but don't remember much other than it was pretty fun, a John Wick style actioner where a mild mannered family man is thrown back into his old life as an assassin.
Not nearly as stern or preoccupied with world building as the John Wick franchise, the big novelty is seeing star Bob Odenkirk play against type. The most unlikely action star in recent memory, the biggest shock being he pulls off the stunts and fight choreography incredibly well.
The sequel finds our hero working as an assassin again to pay off the debts from the first movie. Causing friction and distance with his family, they take a summer vacation to a small little amusement park town. Gosh darn it, turns out the whole thing is a front for very bad people doing very bad things. Who runs all of this? The evil and fabulous Sharon Stone.
Miss Stone is used sparingly, she doesn't appear until about halfway through, but the Hollywood legend always understands the assignment. Not unlike her villainous turn in 2004's CATWOMAN, she knows exactly what movie she is in and what is required of her. Uh yeah she chews the scenery. She shoots, stabs, slices and oh yeah DANCES.
The fight set pieces are shot beautifully with fun and creative choreography. Stacked supporting cast return from the first movie including Fabulous Wife Connie Nielsen, Funny Grandpa Christopher Lloyd(!) and Adopted Brother RZA. I appreciated the family aspect of the movie, that they do love Hutch and each other. It's just always a breath of fresh when these movies don't make the kids absolute brats.
Just checked my calendar and it's still SUMMER MOVIE SEASON. We're winding down, but running at a tight 90 minutes, NOBODY 2 made me feel like I was still on vacation.
