Now You See Me: Now You don’t
Now You See Me: Now You Don't
Directed by Ruben Fleischer
You know after a long work week filled with errands and life obligations, sometimes you need to turn your brain off and watch movie stars do stupid things. My goodness how stupid. This legacy magician threequel is completely preposterous, ridiculous and over the top. I loved it!
This is a blast and a great time at the movies, big part to the cast both new and returning. Everyone is having fun and the energy is infectious, with zippy direction by low-key pro Ruben Fleischer (couple of Venom and Zombieland movies). Here, The 4 Horseman are back! The fictitious celebrity magicians that are also part of a larger mythology Robin Hood-type shadow group.
ANYWAY, we have like 8 protagonists and instead of some half-hearted attempt to give everyone an arc of some sort, the filmmakers just lets the cast rip and roar. Newcomers Dominic Sessa, Justice Smith and Ariana Greenblatt offer some of the emotional framework, and there's bits and pieces here among the veterans. But ultimately this is glossy romp with your friends filled with spectacular CGI magic tricks and some rather impressive production design. There's a thrilling walk through an old castle filled with secrets and tricks that was way more fun than it should have been.
What about our veterans? Woody Harrelson is doing his thing and Jesse Eisenberg plays up his particular brand of Zuckerberg-ian charm just enough. I actually kinda hate how much I like Dave Franco, that dude is charismatic and cute(eyeroll!). And returning after skipping part 2 is the lovely Isla Fisher bringing a charming "Mom Just Happy To Be Here" energy. GONE GIRL herself Rosamund Pike is the evil diamond business lady bad guy with a RIDONKULOUS South African(??) accent that I just adored.
Did I mention how absolutely insane all of this is? Don't ever let silly things like LOGIC get in the way of making your fun as hell movie. Abracadabra!
